August Perennials
Since most of the garden had already bloomed back in early June- July, by the end of July it had past its prime and needed to be trimmed back. It was nice to have a few late summer blooms to keep the garden alive and color in sight. The key to an ever-blooming garden is to plant a variety of flowers with different blooming periods.
Here are some perennials (garden zone 6a) that will keep your garden full in color through September…
Almost all of these perennials are mixed shade/sun except 2:
Yellow cutleaf coneflower prefers more shade than sun
Hosta Aphrodite prefers full shade with the exception of morning sun.
Diverse blooming seasons also help pollinators stick around in the garden longer. So, if you want to help save the bees, keep those blooms coming!

Red Heart Rose of Sharon
In July, my white Rose of Sharon bloomed leading me to believe that was the only tree I had. To my surprise, 3 other unique varieties bloomed this month: Sugar Tip, Read Heart, and Blush.
Black-eyed Susan, Hosta Halcyon, Shasta Daisy, Joe-pye weed
Black-eyed Susan flowers last FORever. I didn’t realize the blooming period of a plant could span over 60 days. If you’re looking for a low maintenance perennial that you can depend on providing lots of color all summer long, Susan is ya girl.
Pink and white Spider Flowers
How fun and whimsical are these pink and white Spider flowers? Spider flowers come up from seed and can look like weeds, so be really careful not to toss them (like I almost did) !!
